Reflection

Just had a shower thought… What do I look like in other people’s eyes? We will never know…

Mirror has flaws. If you studied physics, you should know that nothing is perfect. Every surface is actually not that smooth as you think, even mirrors. The microscopic cracks on the mirror, millions of them, will distort your reflection. So, the image you see on mirror is not really you. Besides, the reflection of mirror is left-right inverted. Therefore, mirror doesn’t reflect who you truly are in people’s eyes.

Camera has flaws either. Basic common sense; You can’t put a 3D image on a 2D object. Our face is round, a 3D object. Phone screen, photos are 2D objects. Everything in camera and photos are in flat surface. Which means camera distorts your image into a flat square object and projects on a piece of paper or a screen. Your image is again, distorted.

Irony is, the old saying “No one knows you better than yourself”, is scientifically wrong. People who see you truly know what you look like. But you will never know you really look like. No one can describe what you look like. Because they are just words. Besides, everyone has different opinion about you. People are human. They see each individual in a different way. So, no one can tell you what you look like either.

The closest way to observe what you really look like. Is to put 2 mirrors in a perpendicular angle. To make the left-right inverted image become right-left inverted again. Which means double-reflection. This way the reflection you see is truly who you are… In motion… But the flaws of mirrors are still there. Nothing is perfect, but this is the closest thing to see yourself.

People do say that a professional photographer can do it, with lighting, shadows, angles and the right camera settings. It might be true, but still… It is a camera after all. Nothing is perfect. But close enough…

I guess this is life isn’t it…
